The fostering application process
Becoming a foster carer is an important decision and the fostering approval process reflects this. We are with you every step of the way.
The process takes approximately 6 months and is designed so you have the opportunity to fully understand what it means to be a foster carer, as well as making sure that we can fulfill our objective in providing children with safe and loving families who will be there for them for as long as they need them.
Our team will give you more details on how the application process works, but here’s a quick guide:
1. Initial contact
After you’ve approached us with an interest in fostering, we’ll arrange a time to chat to you about Break's approach to fostering, ask you a few questions about why you’d like to foster and of course answer your questions too.
2. Home visit
A member of our team will visit you in your home to talk in more detail and get to know your family.
3. Expression of Interest
If we both agree this is the right step for you, we’ll ask you to make a formal expression of interest so the approval process can start.
4. Completing the assessment
The assessment is called a Form F. You will work with your Break Supervising Social worker to complete this over a series of face to face and virtual sessions. This Form, together with other supporting documents, is used to inform the fostering panel who will decide whether you are suitable to be approved.
5. Fostering Panel
You will attend a Fostering Panel, supported by your Break Social worker, to discuss the information in your Form F. Your social worker will make sure you are fully prepared.
6. Approval and matching
Once approved we will carefully match you with a child.
