We are delighted to announce Leon Reid, accomplished athlete and former Olympic sprinter, as our newest ambassador.
Growing up in foster care and experiencing 13 different homes, Leon’s inspiring story resonates deeply with the young people supported by Break. He found a passion for athletics and with the support of his dedicated coach he went on to represent Ireland and Great Britain, earning a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to competing at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Although his athletic career ended following a conviction in 2021 which saw him complete community service, his determination to make a positive difference has seen Leon build a successful career as a sports performance coach for athletes and young professional footballers, whilst also becoming an advocate for young people with care experience.
Rachel Cowdry, CEO of Break, welcomed Leon’s appointment, saying: "We are excited to welcome Leon Reid as an ambassador for Break. His journey, from growing up in foster care to excelling in athletics, and his determination to rebuild his life, is one of resilience. While we acknowledge his past convictions, we’ve had open and honest conversations with him and are confident in his accountability and growth. Leon’s unique perspective can inspire our young people and help them realise their potential."
Leon’s role as Break’s ambassador will include sharing his story and using his platform for positive change for those within the care system.
Leon expressed his enthusiasm for the role, saying: "I’m proud to be an ambassador for Break. Growing up in foster care, I know how important it is to have people who believe in you. Sport became my outlet, and I was fortunate to have guidance when I needed it. My experiences, both positive and challenging, have shaped who I am. I want to show young people that their past does not define their potential and that, with the right support, they can achieve incredible things."
