How the fostering recruitment process works

We know that the recruitment process can feel quite daunting and it’s important to know that becoming a foster carer will take a little while.

Being a foster carer is a big commitment, and the recruitment process reflects this. But what we really want you to know before you start is that the process is always a two-way conversation, designed so that you have the opportunity to ask questions and fully understand your future role as well as making sure that we do our job in protecting the children and young people coming into the fostering service.

There are more details in our guide to foster caring, but these are the six steps you can expect once you first make an enquiry, to starting your fostering journey:

1. Initial contact: we’ll arrange a time to talk to you in more detail about Break’s fostering service, and talk to you about why you’re interested in fostering and how that would fit with your current circumstances

2. Home visit: either a Supervising Social Worker or Break’s Fostering Team manager will come out to your home to talk in more detail about the questions from your initial contact phone call.

3. Expression of Interest: at this point we’ll ask if you’d like to make a formal expression of interest to get the recruitment process started.

4. Filling in a ‘Form F’: Together with your appointed Supervising Social Worker you’ll complete a ‘Form F’, the document the fostering panel will read to help them decide whether they should recommend you for foster caring

5. Fostering Panel: Break’s Fostering Panel meets throughout the year. Their job is to make recommendations for new foster carers and annually re-approve current foster carers. You’ll be encouraged and supported to attend the Panel to discuss your application. Please do ask questions if you’d like to know more about the fostering panel.

6. Approval and matching: once approved, we’ll begin the process to match you with a child in need of a safe and loving environment to start their next chapter.
