Why support Break?

For many, turning 18 is a celebration. For care leavers however, this time can be anything but. Turning 18 changes their status, which means they must legally leave the care system, often with little support.

With limited choices for the 10,000 young people who leave care each year in England, they are over three times more likely than their peers to be not in education, employment or training, and it’s estimated that 26% of the homeless population have care experience.

But we make sure they have someone there to help guide them into adulthood and find safe housing. We’ll help with budgeting, doing the food shop, the laundry, and support them in prioritising their health and wellbeing. It’s easy when you know how, but overwhelming when you don’t.

When you Step Up to take on the trail. You’re Standing Tall with our young care leavers, letting them know that the sky is never the limit.

Over 300,000 will visit the trail this year – just imagine how many young lives we could change is everyone stepped up and stood tall!

“Being part of Break has been really positive for me. They are very welcoming and kind. No one else has given me the kind of support I need like Break does.”

Richie, young care leaver
